What is Ayahuasca?

Ayahuasca is a psychoactive plant medicine traditionally used by indigenous peoples in the Amazon basin for spiritual and healing purposes.

The word "ayahuasca" comes from the Quechua language, spoken by indigenous peoples in the Andes, and it roughly translates to "vine of the soul" or "vine with a soul."

Ayahuasca is typically prepared as a brew or tea by combining two sacred plants: the Banisteriopsis caapi vine with other plants, most commonly the leaves of the Psychotria viridis shrub. The active ingredients in ayahuasca are beta-carbolines from the B. caapi vine, which act as MAO inhibitors (monoamine oxidase inhibitors), and dimethyltryptamine (DMT) from the P. viridis leaves.

DMT is a powerful hallucinogenic compound that, when ingested orally, is normally broken down by enzymes in the digestive system. However, the MAO inhibitors in the ayahuasca brew allow DMT to be absorbed and exert its psychedelic effects when consumed.

Ayahuasca has been used for centuries in traditional Amazonian shamanic rituals, where it is believed to facilitate communication with spirits, provide insights, and contribute to personal and spiritual growth.
